This is the third production of Jersey Boys that I have seen and it deserves a bigger audience than it had tonight. It was bloody freezing outside but a theatre is usually nice and warm. The set is the same that was used in both other productions and is effective and functional. I really like the use of the theatre cases as props. This, like Beautiful, relies heavily on its lead. Max Beal as Frankie Valli was really good, no issues at all with his or anyone’s performance. It just seemed dulled down from others I’d seen and that may be direction or the lack of audience or both. It was pretty text book stuff really with a lack of originality. Lighting and sound were both above average. A slight issue with volume at the beginning was fixed quickly and no sound cues were missed. Choreo was again unspectacular and lacked the crispness required that only comes with rehearsal time. Overall it was a solid show and worth the ticket price and I left happy but not uplifted.
